Search Engines dislike duplicated content and penalize them mainly due to two reasons: First, they don’t want to show the same pages in their search results. And secondly, they don’t want to spend the resources in indexing pages that are substantially similar.
Duplicate Content : Chances of making the mistake
i) Multiple Domains Supplying Same Content :: Resolve by a permanent 301 redirect to the best suited domain.
ii) Site Redesign :: A change in URL architecture (URL structure change -- converting .html to .asp or .php etc.) :: Repair by a permanent 301 redirect or drop the old versions by setting a proper 404.
iii) CMS sites (e-Commerce and PPC campaign sites) -- Result in same product pages with different dynamic URL's :: Repair by a permanent 301 redirect or using the robots exclusion protocol.
iv) Landing pages having same content -- Dynamically generated landing pages resulting in Dupe Content :: Resolve by a permanent 301 redirect or using the robots exclusion protocol.
v) Content syndication and scraping spam issues result in dupe content penalty.
